Our junior (12yrs and under ) team took part in a Somerset hockey festival at Yeovil- the first ever matches for many in the squad and our first since lockdown. The team, despite injuries to regulars Pat and Harry and also missing Naz and Will, put in good effort in every game making good improvements throughout the morning.
Poppy, Alfie and Alicia linked particularly well in the penultimate game v Yeovil A. Alfie was solid in defensive tackles and passed forward for Poppy and Alicia who drove hard into the D several times. Alicia finally forced the ball passed the keeper to secure the win.
In the game against Chard, coach Joe encouraged strong passing to wide players and Evie C made some timely tackles and forced the ball to wide player SashaH. Charlie W also used the wide channel from defence finding Jorja in attacking positions. Alfie also had some strong strikes going just wide of goal. However a confusion in front of goal allowed a Chard player to pounce on a free balland score to leave the final score 1-0 to Chard.
Keeper Fred had an amazing tournament pulling off save after save including palming away lofted shots.
Games against Yeovil B, Wellington, Taunton vale boys and Taunton vale girls saw Bridgwater work hard . Despite good wide positioning of Sophie and Isobel Bridgwater struggled to maintain possession and Fred often found himself alone with several attackers resulting in goals for the opposition. However the team were not disheartened. All enjoyed the games and are looking forward to training and the next tournament soon.
