A narrow loss where the score line didn’t reflect a brilliant performance for the 3’s

BWHC L3XI 1 – 3 Minehead L2XI (Away)

A narrow loss where the scoreline did’t reflect a brilliant performance for the 3’s

After a week of short selection the ladies had an a less experienced 3XI at their disposal, but with the bad weather staying away Bridgwater believed they could get a positive result.

Things started well for Bridgwater as they pressed and harried against a far more experienced team. Young players Sophy Goodman and Ellie Coleman both looked confident, but it was the back line of Lydia Helmsley, Linda Hay and Bridget Hedaux with skipper Sue Chaplin who were the busiest. They kept Minehead at bay as Samantha Mirto made some good saves as well. But it wasn’t just in defence Bridgwater looked lively, when Morgan Edwards broke down play she along with Chaplin pressed the ball forward to Shannon Johnson, Stephanie Parsons and Kath Briggs as they all came so close to scoring a goal. There were two important subs who came onto the pitch, both of which made their debuts, young Lucy Bremner came on in the middle and Sarah Reid came on at the back, both of whom put a shift in to continue the good work. Before half time Minehead did manage to score, from a scrappy deflected shot that snuck over the line.

Bridgwater had a good positive half time team talk as they had plenty of things to take from the first half, which in fairness they could have been equal or even ahead. Minehead started the brighter of the two teams, but the Bridgwater wall was well and truly up. Some good play from the back allowed Bridgwater to press up front but Bridgwater couldn’t quite find the finishing touch. Minehead pressed and finally got their reward with a shot from a narrow angle just creeping in. Bridgwater would be done yet as Chaplin and Edwards battled in the middle, but a great move started down the right from Shannon, came in via Sophy and Kath with Parsons slotting the ball under the out rushing keeper for her first goal and a route back into the game. Shannon came close minutes later but narrowly missed. Unfortunately as Bridgwater pressed to get something more Minehead countered and got a third, which wasn’t fair on the defences awesome hard work.

Right until the end Bridgwater pressed but were unfortunate to not come away with at least a point. Player of the match votes were evenly spread out as up until the last vote 4 players were in with a shout, it was Morgan Edwards for her hard work in defensive midfield who got the award. Well done to all who played, such a positive continued improvement after only 3 weeks together.

We return home next week to play Cheddar 2's in hope we can repeat the success our 2XI had against them this week.
