First half
The bridgwater ladies 2XI head away to Taunton to play Civil Service 2XI during an unforgiving down pour which wouldn’t let up for the whole length of the game. The start of the game saw Bridgwater the stronger team holding possession more than their opponents.
Miche Rushe & Tara Russel helped push the play forward, passing around the Taunton CS players and travelling good distance up the pitch. Despite the play being in the attacking half for a while Bridgwater couldn’t quite bag that goal.
On occasion, CS broke forward fast and Bridgwater defence had to react quickly. When played turned, forward Rose Baker, covered the left back position with confidence and success. Sue Durkin made some cracking and crucial saves to keep any hope alive of a clean sheet and a win!
After some intense defending from Rachel Higgs and Vicky Redwood the ball left the defensive half. Jess Shobbrook found herself almost alone in the attacking half and glided up pitch towards the CS keeper for a one on one. Jess went flying over the top of the keeper with style but to her frustration, no longer had the ball. First half ended on 0-0.
Second half
The second half saw a well deserved goal from work between skipper Clare Wilson and winger Abbie Stevens. It was Abbie who grabbed the goal making the score a more representative 1-0.
With Bridgwater keeping the press and giving CS some hassle, Abbie Stevens and team mates crowded in the D to get a ball past the CS keeper. It was Jess Shobbrook who slipped the ball past the defence; the goal was disallowed.
Danni Morgan continued to put in a good shift, as she did in the first half, covering good ground and creating chances. A few good runs from Josie Loxton in defence too, bringing the ball right up to the attacking D. Cheryl Notaro-Livingstone, hungry to make it 2-0, attempted to finish off some chances, beating several players on many occasions but just missed out on adding to the score line.
Jess managed to fly over the keeper for the second time in the match before Bridgwater are given a compelling opportunity, a short corner. With a strong push out from Miche, a hesitation at the top of the D followed. Abbie Stevens stepped up and head the ball towards the goal keeper only for Chloe Sage to pick up the rebound and finish it off with a reverse sweep. A perfect way to end the game. 2-0.
Player of the match: Split 3 ways. Tara Russel for her industrious efforts in midfield and goal scorers Abbie Stevens and Chloe Sage.
