Bridgwater win against Cheddar 2-0

A home game again this week for the 2nd 11. And it was only an 11. The team started strong, determined not to have another slow 1st half like last week.

Holly Hobbs, playing left wing, dribbled the ball the length of the pitch several times keeping possession and creating chances for forwards Jess Shobbrook and Cheryl Notaro-Livingstone.

The 2’s soon opened the scoring after a strong strike on target from Cheryl. With the defenders tight together by goal, Miche Rushe got on the end of Cheryl’s strike and tapped the ball into goal past them.

Sheila Burridge supported and directed the defence well, encouraging confident play in the attacking half. Also tracking back fast and reducing the saves Sue Durkin needed to make. Tara Russel was able to push forward and have a huge impact on the game, leaving Rachel Higgs as the final line of defence. Rachel perfected any last ditch tackles when needed and hit the ball back up the field. The team went into half time 1-0 up.

In the second half, with no subs, it was visible how hard the team were working but they managed to keep efforts up. Clare Wilson held the middle well, finding the energy to sprint into space to be on the end of any Bridgwater hit outs. Clare, along with Miche and Tracey Gue, was able to stay high when Bridgy were attacking (which was the majority of the second half).

With the 2’s looking eager to make it 2-0 and after some persistent play in the D, they take an opportunity on a short corner. Miche again, is in an ideal position after injecting the ball, Clare shoots towards the goal and a well timed sweep from Miche beats the defence.

A final score of 2-0 keeps up the 100% win record and the team are currently top of the league!

Joint player of the match was awarded to Miche Rushe and Tara Russel for their supportive defensive work and pushing forward when required.

Next week sees the ladies 2’s head north to play Winscombe’s 3rd team.
