The Women’s 1s took the grossly long away trip to Penzance this weekend. With a flashy Merc mini bus and a Range Rover as transport vehicles the team travelled in style to sunny Cornwall. After the long journey, it was only fitting that the captain physically landed herself in a pile of dog poo (in sliders)… But we’d arrived on time and were itching to get on pitch, so let’s play some hockey! The match was an intense and physical battle throughout! Both teams putting in solid tackles and stringing passes together well. Penzance broke the stalemate after a fortunate short corner that managed to just trickle over the line. Some exceptional saves from keeper Holly Butterfield and the solid Bridgy backline kept the team in the game, but the home side led into the second half 1-0. The second half was just as intense as the first half, however Bridgwater found themselves in the more dominant position, really testing the Penzance keeper with some rapid counter attacks from player of the match Beth Porter and Chloe Fewings! After some excellent team passing across the whole pitch, Bridgwater managed to get on the scoresheet after a diving sweep from Captain Saph found the backboard, expertly assisted by Lucy Burridge. Bridgwater again kept pushing up the pitch, maintaining possession and taking the chances, however a run away counter attack from Penzance found a foot in the defensive D, which they managed to convert. 2-1. A final flurry for a goal was needed and Bridgwater managed to win a short corner, which was beautifully put over the line by Donna Cooper, however the goal was controversially disallowed for not leaving the D. A frustrating end to the match as we knew we deserved to come away with some points, however the team put in another solid performance in the new league, and we know there are points on the horizon for the taking!
