Bridgwater Hockey Club have signed up to an initiative which helps to educate youngsters who participate in sport, to appreciate the benefits of being “Smoke Free”.
The initiative run by SASP and Somerset County Council calls upon sports clubs to promote a negative association between smoking and physical activity, where the adults within the club are acting as role models to the youngsters.
The club will ensure that its grounds will be smoke free at all times when young people are present, both when training and competing at the club. During training the youngsters are taught about the benefits about not smoking and how smoking can have a negative impact on a sports person’s performance.
As part of the project, the club has been provided with signage to advertise the Smoke Free zone. The youngsters from Bridgwater Hockey Club are pictured prior to their evening training session.
The Bridgwater Hockey Club youth section is growing and vibrant. We provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all youngsters from the age of 7 to 16 to receive a high level of coaching tempered with a great deal of fun.
Our qualified coaches create a professional environment, where young players learn not only the skills of the game, but also the disciplines of team sport and tactics. We also aim to develop skills through local festivals at u10 , u12 , u14 and u16 level and we enter a range of National Junior competitions.
Where appropriate we will channel young players through the England Hockey Single system introducing them to representative hockey at county and regional level (and above!). We also have a route from junior hockey into senior/adult club selection and many of our juniors go on to represent Bridgwater in the adult teams.
Any youngster can come along - we welcome all children from ages 7 to 14. They do not need to have played hockey before as our sessions cater for all abilities. They need the enthusiasm to want to get active and find out more about hockey.
Come along and try a session at Chilton Trinity 'astro' each Tuesday 6pm-7pm

Bridgwater U10 and U12 hockey festival
Teams from Taunton Vale and Taunton CS were at Chrilton Trinity getting fully involved in the busy morning of games. The junior team of Lauren Morrish, Christian Durkin, Francis Baugh, Tom Syvret, Dan Stone, Aiden Casey and Olivia Dillon played some fantastic hockey showing great development of skills with Dan Stone dominating the midfield and Tom Syvret showing a maturity in defence making some timely tackles.
Francis Baugh played both in defence and attack where he made some strong runs into the attacking circle crossing the ball creating great chances in the D. The 'oldies' included Lewis Coade, Poppy Baugh, Maddy, Steven Richards and Niamh Dillon who worked hard to keep both Taunton Vale boys and Taunton Vale girls teams at bay - just losing out in the end. Well done all!
Many thanks to all parents for their support and to Julie and Phil Morrish and Bridget Hedaux for umpiring and organising through the miserable rain!
